Media statement of the Congress Working Committee of the Congress of the People, 25 January 2010

The CWC of COPE met today at its headquarters in Braamfontein. On the agenda were issues relating to the Policy Conference, the National Congress, preparations for the strategic meeting, the programme of action for 2010 and reports in the media relating to statements made by the COPE Youth Movement.

The CWC agreed that plans for the Policy Conference and the National Congress would be presented to the next Congress National Committee at the beginning of February. The CWC discussed the preparations for the national meetings that will take place this year and agreed that all efforts should be made to have these meetings sooner rather than later, once the necessary logistics are in place.

The strategic meeting will take place at the end of the month and will include the CNC members and national MPs and MPLs from each of the nine provinces. This meeting will offer input to the programme of action for the year ahead to present to the CNC.

The meeting discussed the unfortunate statement made to the media by leaders of the COPE YM. While COPE is a democratic organisation that encourages debate, and while members are free to air their views, this must be done in a constructive manner and in a tone mindful of the ethos and culture of the party. Labelling other members and using provocative language is not in the spirit of COPE. The CWC wants to communicate to its members and the people of South Africa that only a congress of the party can disband the CNC elected in Bloemfontein in December 2008. Whatever the challenges and weaknesses that party is facing, it would be a dereliction of duty if the leadership of the party disbanded itself and handed over the party to an unelected committee chosen by an unrepresentative group of members. The continued promotion of the idea that there are divisions in the leadership of the party is most destructive, as is the continued disinformation about the state of affairs in the party. The CWC will be calling a meeting with the leadership of the YM to discuss these issues. The CWC will address the leadership of the YM very firmly on this and other issues it has raised. The party will therefore reserve further comment on this matter until this meeting has taken place.
